BEER TALK

Adnams Broadside Ale

About the beer: Adnams Brewery has been under the same family ownership since 1872. The tradition of brewing dates back six centuries in Southwold, England. Adnams Broadside contains two malts (Maris Otter Pale and Caramel) and two hops (Goldings and Fuggles).

Just the facts: 7.3 percent by weight, 42 IBUs, available nationally.

fred eckhardt Beautiful -- garnat color and brilliant clarity, with a good mix of malt and hops on the nose. Good solid flavor on the palate, with a lightly accented roast character, very nice balance on the palate: rich taste and surprisingly complex character.

garrett oliver Nearly as red as a claret, the beer gives away its malty pedigree with a tight-knit tan head. The nose is complex and earthy, combining peach and mango notes with a whiff of sea air. On the palate the beer is fat and sweet up front, then broad moderate hopping drops the malt back to a drying finish with a lingering bitterness and toasty malt flavor. A delicious beer that would be perfect with a good steak. michael jackson This famous coastal brewery named its strong ale after a round of shots fired in a sea battle. The amber-brown brew is very lively, with a remarkably smooth, clean, maltiness; a restrained, English hoppiness (you can almost taste the sacking from which the hop-pocket was made); and a pear-skin fruitness. A dexterous balancing act of very big flavors.

This beer was reviewed for the September 1996 issue of All About Beer Magazine.
