This is part of an in-depth looking at brewing industry awards by All About Beer. You may go from here directly to any of the other parts.

The World Beer Cup

First held in June of 1996 in Vail, CO, the biannual World Beer Cup is produced and presented by the Association of Brewers. The competition was prompted by brewers outside the United States who wanted to know why they could not enter their beers in the Professional Panel Blind Tasting at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF).

The judging is modeled after the Professional Panel Blind Tasting. This year, the panel judged 588 bottled beers from 283 breweries in 25 countries. Gold, Silver and Bronze plaques can be awarded in 61 categories, although the judges are not required to give out awards if they feel that the entries are not worthy. In 1996, 146 awards were given out.

The goal of the competition is to recognize the traditions and innovations shared by the worldwide industry as well as the customs that are unique to various countries and regions. "There are no borders anymore to limit the art and science of brewing," Marcia Schirmer said. "Unique traditions are being shared, brewed and enjoyed worldwide. For example, a Korean brewery won Silver and Gold awards in the American Lager category this year."

Organizers plan to hold the event outside the United States in 1998, and they anticipate that the competition will double in size.
