WHAT'S BREWING Headlines May - June 2002 ...
************
George Fix DiesGeorge Fix, Ph.D., passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2002. Fix was a noted homebrewer, author of brewing and mathematics books and editor of a journal of applied mathematics. He was also the Chair of Mathematical Sciences at Clemson University in South Carolina, and was formerly the Chairman, Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Texas at Arlington. Fix earned his doctorate in mathematics from Harvard University. A prolific homebrewer and writer of books and articles on brewing, Fix's books included Principles of Brewing Science and An Analysis of Brewing Techniques. He lectured frequently at meetings of the American Homebrewers Association and the Master Brewers Association of the Americas. Fix died of acute pneumonia and had been diagnosed with cancer over a year ago. He is survived by his wife Laurie.
************ Ziplock Beer PouchesIncan, a new company based in Alaska, is selling heat-sealed, ziplock foil pouches as a substitute for bottles. Incan claims the pouches are perfect for beer-loving backpackers who don't want to carry the weight of a bottle or can, as well as taking up less shelf space than bottles. Alaska's Great Bear Brewery is the first to package their beer in an Incan. http://incanpouch.tripod.com
************ Guinness Sues A-BGuinness UDV is taking A-B to court, complaining that A-B's new Red Label beer infringes on the trademark and brand identity of UDV's Johnnie Walker Red Label Scotch Whisky. UDV claims that A-B not only uses the Red Label name, but also uses similar gold and red graphics on the beer's packaging. UDV seeks a court order to prevent A-B from selling Red Label beer.
************ "Cultural Exchange is Wonderful"Attribute the above quote to Garrett Oliver, brewmaster at The Brooklyn Brewery. Last February Oliver traveled to Manchester to co-brew a 100-barrel batch of Brooklyn Best Bitter with Giles Dennis, head brewer of the 174-year-old J.W. Lees Brewery of Manchester, England. In March Dennis returned the favor, traveling to Brooklyn to brew a 28-barrel batch of J.W. Lees' Manchester Star, an ale based on a recipe dug out of the brewery's dusty old brewing logs. Manchester Star was last brewed in November 1884. The Brooklyn-brewed Manchester Star is a strong brown ale (7% abv) hopped with English hops.
************ NBC Backs off from Liquor AdsAfter being blasted by groups such MADD, the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse and a number of Congressional lawmakers, NBC has decided to reverse a decision to allow ads for hard liquor over the television network.
************ Miller Brewing - On the Block?Philip Morris hasn't come out and said they plan to sell Miller, but they have appointed New York merchant bank Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein to "investigate options" regarding Miller. South African Breweries and Interbrew are often mentioned as likely candidates to purchase Miller, the second-largest domestic brewer.
************ Church or the Pub?A survey conducted by Mintel Ireland found that going to the pub is a more important part of everyday life than going to church for most Irish men and women. The survey reports that 22% of people in the Irish Republic view regular church going as important, while 35% said a greater priority was going to the pub at least once a week for a wee pint or so.
************ Green Eyes & GuinnessOn St. Patrick's Day in the UK, Guinness supplied bar staff with green contact lenses. The idea was to subtly steer drinkers towards Guinness as their choice as they decided on their drink order. Research has shown that by the time they reach the bar, more than half of UK drinkers have not yet decided what to order.
************ Being A-B Chief Pays WellAugust Busch III, chairman and CEO of Anheuser-Busch, received a bonus of $3.3 million for 2001, up 10 percent from the $3 million he received in 2000. His 2001 salary was $1.2 million, unchanged from 2000. Busch also achieved a profit in 2001 of $5 million from share options.
************ Another Budweiser BrewhouseHMSHost Corporation, the world's largest provider of food, beverage and retail concessions to the travel industry, has opened its newest Budweiser Brewhouse in Memphis International Airport. HMSHost operates Budweiser Brewhouses in fourteen airports nationwide including Chicago O'Hare, Las Vegas McCarran International, Miami and Newark.
************ Germans Drink Less BeerThey just don't drink beer like they used to in Germany. The German Brewers' Association reports that per capita beer consumption in Germany fell from 125.5 liters in 2000 to 123 liters in 2001. With fewer regular beer drinkers in the 30- to 45-year old age bracket, Germany has fallen to third place in Europe in per capita beer consumption, trailing the Czech Republic and Ireland. And the Belgians also Drink Less BeerThe Belgian National Statistics Office reports that per capita beer consumption in Belgium has fallen from 131.3 liters in 1980 to 98 liters in 2000. Beer is now the fourth most popular drink in Belgium, falling behind coffee, soft drinks and water.
************ British MP Demands Reduction in the Price of a PintLiberal Democrat MP Norman Baker of the House of Commons has introduced legislation to lower the cost of a pint of locally produced beer by 30 pence. Baker claims the lower price would help small breweries compete against the UK's big brewers. Other MPs have backed Baker's proposal to reduce taxes on ales produced by traditional local breweries and to completely remove taxes on microbreweries.
************ The Guinness "Quick Pour"Dismayed at the time it takes to pour a perfect pint of Guinness, the makers of the famous Irish stout have devised a faster way to pour the ale, hoping to attract younger customers. "A two-minute pour is not relevant to our customers today," said CEO Paul Walsh of Diageo UDV, Guinness's parent company. With the new "Quick Pour" method, Guinness is poured into a glass without carbonation. The flat beer is then injected with an ultrasonic pulse that releases bubbles into the liquid. A white, foamy head appears in 15 to 25 seconds. The older Guinness slogan, "Good Things Come to Those Who Wait," loses its relevance with the "Quick Pour," the newest in a line of "improvements" to Guinness that include Guinness Extra Cold and Guinness Draught in a Bottle. Diageo reports that sales of Guinness are down 1% globally, 4% in Ireland and flat in the UK. Guinness isn't alone in wanting to serve customers more quickly. Carlsberg-Tetley, the UK's fourth-largest brewer, is experimenting with a tap that will pour a pint of lager in 14 seconds, 30% faster than current taps.
************ Coors and the NFLCoors will sign a $300 million deal with the NFL to become the league's ''official'' beer sponsor for the 2002-2007 seasons. Coors will have exclusive rights to NFL trademarks and rights to use all team logos. A-B and Miller shared the NFL sponsorship for the last three seasons.
************ Celis Sold - AgainThe Celis Brewery of Austin, TX (founded in 1992 by Belgian brewer Pierre Celis, invested in by Miller later that decade, 100 percent purchased by Miller in 2000 and closed later that year by Miller), has been sold to Michigan Brewing Co. of Weberville, MI. Michigan Brewing bought the 100-barrel brewhouse, tanks, packaging equipment, office equipment and lab equipment, but not the rights to the Celis brands, which have been kept by Miller. The Michigan micro will install the brewing equipment in a new building in Michigan and plans to be up and running by the end of the year, brewing a Belgian-style white beer, similar to the now-defunct Celis White.
************ A Full Pint, PleaseBritish beer drinkers will be getting a bit more ale. The government says when a patron orders a pint, bartenders must make sure the glass is 95 percent full. The current minimum is 90 percent. Pubs that fail to pour a full measure could face charges. Pulling a pint of beer is more art than science. Britain's trade secretary says foam can take up a lot of room in the glass, depending on the skill of the bartender. The new 95 percent standard means Brits will drink about 60 million more pints of beer this year.
************ U.S. Beer Drinking TeamYou have to love these folks. A press release came in recently announcing "the grand opening of the U.S. Beer Drinking Team (USBDT) World Wide Headquarters, Team Website (www.USBeerDrinkingTeam.com) and Beer Shopping Network (www.BeerShoppingNetwork.com)." The organizers of this group describe it as "a nationwide team of responsible beer drinkers É conceived as a fun way to organize the country's beer drinkers into a team." Affiliated activities include "Officially Endorsed Products and Services," "Benefits to Affiliates" (such as bars, restaurants and suppliers), BeerTelevision.com and BeerShoppingNetwork.com. The USBDT predicts 24,000,000 members by the end of 2002. - And we've got a bridge in Brooklyn we'd love to sell to you. (Oh, sorry. NYC Mayor Bloomberg has already sold that one.) INTERNATIONAL NEWS ROUNDUPEuromonitor International, a UK-based market research firm, reports that total volume sales for the global beer market in 2001 were 136.7 billion liters, up 10.1% from 1997. The greatest gains were seen in Eastern Europe, with a 42.7% growth in beer volume. Jens Bigum has been named the new chairman of Carlsberg Breweries, a Danish-Norwegian company formed in 2000 with the merger of Orkla and Carlsberg. At the same time, domestic beer sales in Denmark fell 3.3% in 2001, continuing a recent decline. Carlsberg made other news, along with Heineken, when the European Union Commission recently ruled that an agreement between the two brewers was an illegal cartel violating EU competition rules. Elsewhere in the Scandinavian beer business, Danish brewer Bryggerigruppen, Norwegian brewer Borg Bryggerier Holding and Swedish brewer Spendrup Invest are planning a three-way merger to be called NewCo. Each of these brewers holds the number two spot in their respective countries. Swedish brewer, Kopparbergs Bryggeri AB, has purchased Banco Bryggerier, also of Sweden. The largest brewer in the UK, Scottish & Newcastle, has made a bid for Finnish brewery group Hartwall, the leader in the Finnish beer market. Hartwall owns 50% of Baltic Beverages Holding, a co-venture with Denmark's Carlsberg Breweries. Baltic sells beer in Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine. Carlsberg Breweries, through its company Carlsberg Asia, will buy Chang Beverages of Malaysia. Asia Pacific Breweries of Singapore will restart construction of its brewery in Hatay, Vietnam. Heineken owns over 40% of Asia Pacific Breweries. Japan's Kirin Brewery will buy a 15% share of the Philippines' San Miguel Corp., brewer of San Miguel beer. At the same time, Kirin plans to brew beer under the Kirin label in Australia and China. China's largest brewer, Tsingtao, has crossed the Taiwan Straights and begun selling beer for the first time in Taiwan. Belgian brewery giant Interbrew is in negotiations to form a joint venture with Thailand's Boonrawd Brewery, maker of Singha beer. Interbrew is also looking to buy a 20% share of China's state-owned Zhujiang Brewery. Still on a buying spree, Interbrew bought a 12.6% interest in Spain's third-largest brewery, Damm, and a 40% share of Slovenia's second largest brewer, Pivovarna Union. In Cuba, Interbrew has extended its joint venture with the country's state-owned brewery, Cerveceria Bucanero. Canada's Molson has acquired Brazil's second largest brewer, Kaiser. Molson already owns a share of Brazil's Bavaria brewery. Anheuser-Busch is off to Russia with Bud on the label, not Budweiser. The company is in a legal dispute over the beer's name in Russia (and many other countries) with Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar. Bud will be imported from the U.S. in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Heineken is also stepping up its presence in Russia with the purchase of St. Petersburg brewery Bravo. More on the A-B v. Budvar front: A-B won its legal battle against Budvar in an Italian court, and is now the only beer allowed to be sold in Italy with the name Budweiser on the label. A-B has recently won legal fights against Budejovicky Budvar in Denmark, Spain and Finland. NEW BEERS
Jack Daniel's Flavored Malt Beverage will debut this summer. The newest in a growing number of "malternatives" to hit the market in the past few years, Jack Daniel's Flavored Malt Beverage is a co-production between Miller Brewing and Brown-Forman Beverages Worldwide (marketers of wines and spirits). Hacker-Pschorr Weisse, a Bavarian wheat beer, is now available 12-packs of longneck 12-oz. bottles. Vibe, a new malternative from Coors, is described as "Zima's wild cousin." Vibe, a fruit-flavored malt-based drink (5% abv), is available in 12-oz. longneck bottles. Coors is also re-introducing Zima, a flavored, clear malt drink that debuted in the 1990s, with new packaging U.S.-based DAB Importers has been acquired by DAB AG of Germany, owned by Binding Brauerei AG, the second-largest brewing group in Germany. Binding brews Clausthaler Non Alcoholic and Radeberger beer. With new management of the U.S. importer, DAB Original, a Dortmunder-style beer brewed since 1868, will be expanded in the U.S. Plans call for a complete redesign of the brand's packaging, including a return to the classic art deco style of the DAB logo. Available in 12-oz. bottles, 5-liter cans and on draft. Molson USA has re-designed the 6- and 12-pack graphics for its flagship Canadian and Canadian Light brands. The body and neck labels remain the same. The Spanish beers Estrella de Galicia are now available in Florida. Importer Halewood International has introduced Caribbean Twist.
