NJ Association of Beerwriters

The North American Guild of Beer Writers was established in 1994 to champion informed coverage of beer in all its aspects and to help beer writers grow professionally. Its creation was a natural outgrowth of the craft beer renaissance at the end of the 20th century. The emergence of microbreweries and brewpubs spurred a revived interest in beer, and all forms of popular media moved to document it.

Craft beer is not a fad. It has been embraced by a wide spectrum of people who also enjoy fine foods, wines, and spirits. Their passion built a demand for specialist publications and coverage of all aspects of the industry. Hundreds of writers stepped forward, and most affiliated with the NAGBW. Sadly, interest in the Guild waned in recent years and its financial health suffered. It became increasingly difficult to operate as a functioning entity.

In April, 2003, the Board of Directors voted to fold the Guild, a decision that was subsequently ratified by the membership. Although the Guild has suspended operations for now, it may still re-emerge in the future in some other form. Therefore, this site will remain up, as it may still prove valuable as an industry resource. The membership directory has been kept up to date, so if you are an editor, publisher, event organizer, or restaurateur trying to find the right writer, consultant, recipe developer, or speaker to help you with your next beer project, go no further. Chances are you'll still find the perfect person here.

Our membership has included top professionals from the full range of print and broadcast media, including major newspapers, trade publications, travel & lifestyle magazines, radio, television, and the Internet. Most of the best-known and most-respected authors of books on beer and brewing have been affliated with us. Almost all have been recognized at some point via our Quill & Tankard awards program, which was developed to recognize superior writing in our industry. This annual competition was open to all writers, including non-members. Awards were presented at our annual general meeting during the Great American Beer Festival® in Denver. The award winners from every competition, from 1995-2002, are included on this site.

Meanwhile, I look forward to meeting you at one of many craft beers events around the world.

Cheers!
